A Dress for a Dragon

It's been a while since I posted any of my designs for goal 53. Design 50 outfits/costumes

And by 'a while', I mean almost a year.

I was still drawing some last march, but then forgot about that goal until December, when I drew some more!

Having picked up the goal again this year, here's a new batch of costume designs. Once again, they're for characters from Folk Tales of the Sea People. Sometimes I've given them a more humanoid spin, imagining these as designs for a theatrical production! Sometimes they're a little odd, such as this first one...

Kashanbo (19/50)
From: The Gentleman Traveller

+ Longline waistcoat of dark green suiting, with lining and collar the colour of wet green seaweed. Batwing-shaped collar and asymmetric hem, gold buttons shaped like turtle shells
+ Off-white lycra dress shirt with seaweed green buttons and pin tucks
+ Top hat to match waistcoat
+ Gold leather mask shaped like a beak
+ Cropped breeches to match waistcoat, cuffs have two-buttoning fastening (smaller version of waistcoat buttons)
+ Off-white stockings
+ Webbed gloves with extra long fingers--seaweed green leather with cotton 'web'
+ Webbed boots to match gloves, extended to look more frog (or kappa!) like.

Read on for triplets, draugs, dragons and more!

Marius/Pontilus/Pelagius (identical triplets) (20/50)
From: Three Brothers and a Draug

+ Top: pale green (to match skintone) with emerald green sequin details. Form fitting so lycra or stretch mesh or something.
+ Trousers: Wide-legged, emerald green, gathered at the hem by cuff (cuff fastens with zip). Fold-over waistband in pale green, decorated with sequins. Dark green cuffs with emerald green sequins. Dark green sequin strips (1.5" wide) down sides of trousers.
+ Shoes: Dark green leather, slipper-style.

Triplets Draug (21/50)
From: Three Brothers and a Draug

+ Jacket: faded blue. Sharp shoulders, slashed cuffs and hem, smooth collar. Button and loop fastening, same as decoration on back. Three buttons on each cuff.
+ Scarf: greying blue fishing net
+ T-shirt: greying white with blue stripe
+ Trousers: Faded grey, half-length, slashed hems, three buttons at each hem.
+ Shoes: dull, well-worn black leather with tarnished silver buckles.
+ Buttons: tarnished silver with raised skull design.

Takumi (22/50)
From: A Dragon in the Sea

+ Helmet: gold metal, with spikes and 'ears'
+ Undershirt: hardwearing gold cloth with mandarin collar and asymmetric button and loop fastening, long cuffs.
+ Trousers: gold cloth to match undershirt
+ Armour: leather-backed gold metal. Articulated and with spiky 'scales', held on with leather straps. Back of 'skirt' has long tail train to floor, all articulated.
+ Gauntlets and knee high boots: metal and leather to match the rest.
Designed to compliment, but not be identical to, Tiamat

Aysu (23/50)
From: A Dragon in the Sea

+ Dress: faux halterneck; royal blue neoprene with high-necked insert of powder blue (skintone) stretch mesh. Dark blue sequin trim. 'Fins' down side of skirt and at hem, from blue iridescent wrinkly fabric.
+ Fingerless gloves: same fabrics as dress, with sequin trim.

Gursel (24/50)
From: A Dragon in the Sea

+ Bodysuit: brown flesh-toned dance fabric with lots of rich brown velvety flocking. Back is same/mirror of front.
+ Cloak: long and brown made of lightweight fabric; fastens with silver brooch with hand motif.

Tiamat (25/50)
From: A Dragon in the Sea

+ Helmet: pearly/iridescent blue-green leather with spiky 'ears'
+ Undershirt: sea green with blue sequin trim and button and loop fastenings and long cuffs.
+ Armour: pearly/iridescent blue-green leather with blue metal spikes and leather straps. Bottom half is skirt-trousers. All articulated. Back of armour has long tail-like train.
Designed to compliment, but not be identical to, Takumi

That's it for now--and halfway there!

I have one more design finished, but I'll post it one I've designed costumes for other characters from that story (The Wily Old Glashtyn). I'm not designing outfits for all the characters in these stories, and some tales I'm skipping altogether, because I'm uninspired.

Though I'm drawing these in my sketchbook at the moment, I have a really great fashion notebook that a friend gave me, which has outlines for sketching onto. Once I've finished designing from Folk Tales... I'll be eager to design some things in that sketchbook instead!

You can find all my designs for this goal on the goal 53 tag.

  1. These are really fun and interesting designs! I like the way the Kashanbo looks a bit like a dandy kappa, and that the armour for Takumi and Tiamat looks like it would actually be practical as well as pretty.
