Hands Up!

Since my last post about my hands-drawing goal, I have drawn a lot of hands.

Once again, Line of Action has proven useful for getting a lot of poses sketched out, with a time constraint that forced me to work quickly, rather than get hung up on one tiny detail.

Of course this means that some of the drawings had errors and/or looked messy, but that's all part of practise!

For a number of sketches, I used coloured pastel pencils....some of which broke halfway through, so I ended up drawing with just the broken little nib. Which isn't so fun.

I tried using the two lightest pencils - white, and a pale yellow - on black paper, but it didn't turn out so well. I should have used the colour as highlight and used the black paper as the shadows, but that didn't occur to me until after I'd drawn these!

I've also been trying to draw from my own references, rather than just relying on that one website. These all took longer than I spend drawing them in timed exercises, but all roughly around 12 minutes.

I don't think I'll get to the point where I can draw a completely realistic hand, and nor do I really want to, but I'm definitely improving at getting the right proportions!

Despite having drawn all of this, I still have over half of the sketchbook left to fill...

  1. You're making really good progress with this goal - keep going! Love that every hand is in a slightly different pose and that you've integrated other objects into some of the pictures as well.

    1. Thanks, I'm getting there at least! It's turned out to be a way to spend time when I don't feel like doing much, or when I want to distract myself from other things!
